YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2006 when...

A friend has just sent this to me and I thought you would enjoy it. Thanks LOR!

(**Cell Phone American English for British mobile phone)

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2006 when...

1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list

AND NOW U R LAUGHING at yourself.

Go on, forward this to your friends. You know you want to !

Eternal Flame

Hello!

So, this is a song by The Bangles, a rock band that became very popular in the eighties. I'm sure you've all heard about them and even sang this song. This is an activity I'll do with my first years students, so you'll find it extremely easy. For those with intermediate levels and above, I recommend you to have a look at their website.

Eternal Flame
________your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you ____________?
Do you feel the same, _________ only dreaming?
_________burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant ________, darling
I watch when ___________sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, _______ only dreaming
Or ________burning an eternal flame?

Say _____________, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely,
and then you come and ease the pain
I __________to lose this feeling .

OK, the first year students would have a list with the options, but I won't give you that!

Welcome

New campus, new students. I hope you all find this site entertaining and useful. I also hope the students of the previous years continue visiting me here.

I've just added a link to the official website of Alisson Krauss, the woman who's singing "When You Say Nothing At All".

I intend to change the song soon, and find new things for you to practice, but the beginning of the academic year is being a little harder than I expected. So please be patient and have a look at other entries in this blog.

See you in class,

Home, sweet home

Here I am, back to "normal" life.

I've seen great plays, I've visited beautiful places, I've met wonderful people and I have enjoyed much more than I expected, but enough is enough. I am exhausted and I need to rest.

I can't tell everything I've done or seen, but I would highlight a couple of events. The first one is Alastair Artingstall's gig.  I had a wonderful time with him and all the people who came to that show. The second would be Romeo and Juliet, played by young actors in the middle of the Botanic Gardens.

I have to thank Gina for her hospitality and her company. I would also like to thank my lovely flatmates (Marta, María, Mariona, Alexandra and Melitta) and neighbour (Maya) because these days would have been really boring without them. I also had lovely classmates and I am really glad I met them all.

And now back to the exams and meetings...Oh well.

The Fringe Festival

So this place is full of people coming and going trying to make the best of their time here.

There is, as you know, an international festival. The most important event (and therefore the most expensive..and by now impossible to attend if you didn't buy the tickets a century ago) is the Tattoo, which is a kind of exhibition of military marches (The truth is that I am not the best person to explain it, since I have never seen it.)

There is also a ... let's call it secondary festival that surrounds the official one. It's called the Fringe Festival. There are theatre plays, music, films and all kinds of art expressions from new or unknown artists. Apart from what I've seen in the streets (street performers and short bits of what you can see in theatres) I've seen a couple of plays: Lady Chatterley's Lover and Have a Nice Life. The fisrt one is an adaptation of one of D.H. Lawrence's novel, set in the 80s (the play, not the novel). The second is a musical comedy. I enjoyed both and, as I discovered the half price ticket office and that you can get free tickets if you are patient, I think I'll see many more.

You can't imagine what a great time I'm having here!!!!

Edinburgh

Hello!!!!!!

Here I am in foggy Edinburgh. This city is so beautiful! And with all the festival celebrations, street performances and the entertainment offers everywhere it's imposible to get bored.

For next year your homework will be: Come to Edinburgh (If the teacher says, you have to do it)

By the way, the weather has been quite nice until today...But even when it's foggy or rainy I don't miss Spain's weather much, really. It only makes the city look more charming.

Panic

As I told you, by mid August I am travelling to Edinburgh and I had the intention to use this as a real blog, telling you about the things I see, the people I meet there, etc. OK the adventure has begun and I haven't even taken off.

Last Thursday when I heard about London airports being in a mess I thought 'oh well, never mind, by Sunday everything will be allright'. And I was right, because all flights from Spain to London are already working. But...

MY FLIGHT FROM LONDON TO EDINBURGH HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!!!!!!!!

Right now I don't know what to do: Look for accomodation in London and try to go there by other means; try to find the other means right now (buses take ages and trains are just as expensive as flights).

So, now is time to panic: AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE:
It seems that my flight hasn't been cancelled. The Spanish website wasn't updated and they said there wouldn't be flights. But the British one says that they will be back to normal tomorrow...Hurrray!!!!!

However, the panic was controlled as a friend from London offered accomodation and another from Edinburgh helped me with the info about other means of transport. Haven't I got lovely friends out there!?

Hello/Goodbye

The intensive courses are over and I've found some time to change things here. The song you are listening to is 'When You Say Nothing At All', which is part of the sound track of Notting Hill. We've only had time to see some extracts from the film, but I think this song is worth. This is a cover by Alison Krauss, one of the most beautiful female voices I've ever heard. I've taken it from an album called 'Now that I've Found You'. I think the lyrics will be easy for you and I hope you enjoy it.

I would like to say that it's been nice to have you all in class (the general course students and the intensive course ones) and I hope to see you now and then . Next year I'll be teaching in the Veterinary Campus, but this is a small world and I guess we'll meet sooner or later. You have my email address and I will be glad to know about your improvements, especially the 'Erasmus' students: Please tell me how you manage out there!

"When you Say Nothing at all"

(don schlitz & paul overstreet/mca music, inc.-don schlitz music, ascap,
And scarlet moon, bmi)

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd
Old mr. webster could never define
What’s being said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all.

At Last!

For some weeks I haven't been able to edit this site from home. But It seems my computer is happy today and she (it's a twisted, revengeful thing, therefore it's she) has let me do some changes. The song playing is widely known: My Baby Just Cares For Me by Nina Simone. Do you remember that lovely videoclip with a cat trying to get into the venue where a sexy female cat was singing? A simple yet beautiful song for you to enjoy.

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is somethin' he can't see
My baby don't care who knows
My baby just cares for me

Baby, my baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
He cares for me
My baby don't care
For cars and races
My baby don't care for
He don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Liberace's smile
Is something he can't see
Is something he can't see
I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for me

Marks

I'll hang the marks on the board along Monday morning (June 12th).
You'll be able to see the dates for September exams and exam revisions too. Remember that if you have any question or the dates for the revisions are not convenient for you, you can always write an email to me and we can try to arrange meetings.

Technical problem solved

Now you can listen to the song...if you ever visit this site ...hello?

Ok, Germán asked a question that kept me surfing the Internet and I think the answer deserves a whole blog entry!

Germán wrote:
"A long time ago, i looked for one lyric** because i didn't understand the "chorus" meaning, maybe it must be an american expression, i believe, or maybe another foreign expression, i'm not sure. The chorus is "Dag gummit dag" and the song is "who is he (and what is he to you?)" by  Bill Withers."

Cool song, Germán. I might put it here to honour the student who posts!! Hurray!!

I've found the lyrics and it seems he says Dadgummit. It's a swearword, something very impolite that is said when you are angry. It is related to Damned. To be honest, I had never heard this variation before, but I found something very interesting here:

"REGIONAL NOTE   There are many regional variants, mostly euphemisms, for damned, both as an oath and as a mild intensive. Southern exclamations and intensives tend to begin with dad–, a euphemism for “god”—hence dadblamed, dadblasted, dadburn, and dadgum. Dadgum can be combined with it in the interjection dadgummit. Another such euphemism is the better-known doggone, probably originally Southern but now widespread. Like dadgum, doggone is used as a mild intensive: “The best doggone deals in Alabama” (billboard in Montgomery). Doggone likewise appears in phrasal interjections: Doggonit, I dropped my hammer. A common Southern and South Midland variant of damned is durn, also euphemistic and relatively mild, as in this snatch of Baltimore dialogue: “If that's not just the weirdest durn thing I ever laid eyes on” (Anne Tyler)."

By the Way ** A lyric is a poem, it is usually used in plural (The lyrics) when it refers to the words of a song. (be careful, this is part of the vocabulary in the last unit (Intermediate) and we're having an exam!!)

Thanks Germán.

It seems you can't hear the song (why didn't you tell me?). I can't upload it now...I'll try some other day, when my computer decides she likes me more than today. Sorry.

depeche mode - Enjoy The Silence (Lyrics)
Words like violence
Break the silence
they come crashing in
Into my little world

Painful to me Pierce right through me Can't you understand Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very unnecessary They can only do harm

Enjoy the silence

Lyrics

tFor lazy students:

Black and white

Wanting love
Lying alone in the dark
Finding peace
Owes more to faith
Than to light
Search out the comforting and warm
Somewhere a place that’s filled with colour
And with form not black and white

Whispered words
Only get lost in the dark
Seeking sense
Is this the reason I write?
I’d share the colours that I’ve found
But my frustration is at how to
Put them down
In black and white

Think it through
Don’t try to run in the dark
Face to face
Each has their own
Left and right
Draw back consider what you’ve seen
But please remember there are colours
In between black and white

Black and White

Thought it was time to change the song. So I've decided to upload this beautiful song by Alastair Artingstall. I think it is easy for you all, with its slow rythm and simple vocabulary (but deep meaning). I'm not going to post the lyrics (yet). Make an effort and try to understand.
Alastair is not a famous singer, so it's not strange that you have never heard about him. But you can listen to more songs and learn about him in the links I've left.
Hope you like it.

I'm back

I've been on holiday for a week but here I am again. Soon I'll change the song and try to add new links and interesting stuff.
Hope you're enjoying/have enjoyed your holidays.

New Song

So, here is the new song. Hand In My Pocket by Alanis Morissette. Full of adjectives for you to look up and desperate! Unless you decide to post an message and ask directly...
There is a short glossary after the lyrics.

I'm broke but I'm happy
I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded
I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine fine fine
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is
giving a high five

I feel drunk but I'm sober
I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah
I care but I'm restless
I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is
flicking a cigarette

What it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
'cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign

I'm free but I'm focused
I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing
I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano

What it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything's just fine fine fine
I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxicab...

Come down to: if a problem comes down to a particular consideration, it can be reduced to that basic consideration
Give a high five:when you clap your hand with a friend's hand in the air. It's an informal way to greet people...or celebrate sports victories...
Flick a cigarette: You put the cigarette between your index finger and your thumb, and you hit it with the index finger, to throw it away.
Figure out: Understand.
Hail a taxi: to wave your hand to call the taxi driver's attention and (luckily) make him/her stop.

What's the willing Suspension of Desbelief?

Well, some people have asked me what the title of my space means...so...let me try to explain.
The term was originally used for film criticism, but now it is extended to the world of psychology, as it is a device we use subconsciously. Ok, you go o the cinema and see a terror film. You get scared at everything and even shout "look back!" to the stupid blonde girl who, instead of running out of the house, goes upstairs. If you didn't suspend your disbelief, you would not believe what you are watching, you would not shout or get scared and would never enjoy a film. So the willing suspension of disbelief is the device your subconscious uses to believe and enjoy what you see.
So here you are, sitting at your Spanish desk, reading and English text, written by your Spanish teacher, listening to songs in English, trying to be immersed in an English-speaking world, only cause you want to learn some foreign language.
3月16日

Welcome

If you've been brave enough to check this "space" you will see that it is still in construction. I'm investigating how to put things so that it is easy for you all to use.
4th year-Students: I've put a song for you. You only have to click on "play". I'll leave the lyrics here, so that you can check. It is related to the grammar point we've just introduced "the+comparative" I hope you like it. If you have any question about the lyrics, you only have to reply to this post "agregar comentario" and ask, I'll answer as soon as possible.

Twisted and sick (Marlango)
The more you see, the more I hide
The more I show, the more I lie
Or may be the more I hide, the more you see
The more I lie, the more I show
But I'm twisted and sick,
So that's fine with me, cause I'm...
The more I show, the more you see
The more I hide, the more I lie
Or even the more you see, the more I show
The more I lie, the more I hide
But I'm twisted and sick,
So that's fine with me, cause I'm...
I'd love to need you, but I don't
I want to miss you, but I don't
And I need to want you
And I miss your wanting
And I want your loving
But I'm twisted...
Until I finish what I have to do
I can't start doing what I should do
I have to do this,
I have to say that
I'll have to go beat
Out
all of the crap
I'll have to sit still
I'll have to fulfill
Those stupid ideas
They have about me

That's fine with me = I don't mind

Beat out = Make disappear by hitting

Crap = (very informal/rude English) Rubbish (= shit, which is even ruder)
